  Thesis RWTH Aachen University

The final step to reach a Bachelor- or Masters Degree is a thesis. To make sure that everything goes well during that last step the following text explains the necessary steps you need to consider while working on your thesis.

How, when and where can you work on a thesis?

It is possible to start a thesis any time, if you fulfill the required conditions (see Bachelor thesis or Master thesis).

You can work on a thesis internally or externally.

Internally refers to working on a thesis in a group of the Department of Chemistry at RWTH Aachen University.

Externally stands for a thesis in a different department, a company or abroad.

A thesis is subject to certain conditions. These are available in the exam regulations.

Thesis in a group of the Department of Chemistry (internal)

  1. Select a group and establish contact

First, you should decide for a group you want to work with. The groups' websites are helpful to find out what their respective research is about. Next, the group leader or a coworker should be contacted. This way topic and schedule of the thesis can be organised.

  2. Registration

The registration of the thesis takes place in the Central Examination Office. Please note that the registration has to be completed before you start working on your thesis.
You receive a form that has to be handed to the supervising group leader. After that the form is forwarded to the Chemistry Examination Committee.

An example of the form form can be downloaded at the Dowload-Center Chemistry.

  3. Completion

You hand the thesis in due time to the Central Examination Office. Furthermore, two copys are handed to the examinants.
The appropriate time limit depends on the course of study, see Bachelor thesis or Master thesis. Furthermore, a statement under oath has to be signed.

External thesis

An external thesis requires much more organsiation than an internal thesis. Especially planning a thesis abroad should begin about one year in advance.

  1. Where?

There are many companies, universities, departements and countries you can go to, so deciding for one group is a huge part of planning.
Next, you should contact the group should in order to organise topic and time of the thesis.

  2. Organisation

In case of an external thesis two supervisors are required: one supervisor at the respective group, another supervisor at RWTH Aachen University who feels ready to evaluate the thesis afterwards. This means the supervisor at RWTH Aachen University should be quite familiar with the topic of the thesis. Besides it is necessary to contact the professor in advance.

Furthermore, a request to the Chemistry Examination Committee has to be submitted. The required form can be downloaded at the Dowload-Center Chemistry.

In addition, the thesis has to be registered before beginning at the Central Examination Office. An example of the required form can be downloaded at the Dowload-Center Chemistry.

  3. Completion

You hand the thesis in due time to the Central Examination Office. Furthermore, two copys are handed to the examinants.
The appropriate time limit depends on the course of study, see Bachelor thesis or Master thesis. Furthermore, a statement under oath has to be signed.

Under certain conditions it is possible to extend the time limit, for example in case of illness. In this case, please contact the Chairman of the Chemistry Examination Committee.
